Walking to lose weight

Making Every Step Count

It seems simple right? Walking daily can greatly improve your overall health. But how much does it really affect your health? To put it simply, A LOT. Not only is it good for your overall health, it can help battle certain diseases and extend your life.

First and foremost, walking burns calories! This can help you maintain or aid in additional weight loss. Changing things like speed, terrain and distance are factors that increase caloric burn. Making a conscious effort to increase your step count also decreases your blood sugar. High levels of glucose in the blood can lead to type II diabetes and other co-morbidities.

Did you know walking is beneficial for memory and cognitive function? Studies show that those who walk have a greater volume of gray matter in the brain (which is a GREAT thing!). This study also found improvements in ability to focus, multitask and hold onto more things in short term memory. Along with the mental benefits of walking, it also affects your emotional well-being in a positive way. Walking stimulates production of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that help improve your mental state. Add in some beautiful fall weather with the color changing leaves and refreshing breeze? There is no better time than now to start walking for your health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of purposeful walking five days a week to start a difference in all aspects of your health. The best part of walking? It’s free and can be done anywhere! Getting to the gym after a long day of work can be challenging when you are pressed for time with family and extracurriculars. Make walking a family fun way to spend some extra time with your loved ones and promote healthy activity.

What do you have to lose? Get outside today and start walking! Every step you take towards your goal is a step in improving your overall health.
